About Incredible Paper Planes (.com)
When I was about 7 years old, I received “The Great International Paper Plane Book” as a gift. The designs were cool looking and challenging to put together. Over the next 20 years, I made hundreds, perhaps thousands of planes at school and at home. I stumbled upon a unique design in 1990 while preparing a bunch of planes for an activity with a Sunday school class I was teaching. It was my first design in which the main wings and tails of the paper plane stuck out from the center of the plane. It looked amazing but flew worse than a brick! To remedy the flying problem, I turned it upside down and tossed it into my living room. To my surprise, it sailed across the room! I hand-traced the folds with a pen, making slight changes with each new plane and eventually came up with a crude F-16 model (more or less) with an engine inlet under the fuselage. I was convinced that someday, I would get these new designs marketed.
In 1993, I contacted AG Industries, Inc. in Redmond, WA who market and distribute the “Whitewings” series gliders. I sent them four of my line-art designs which they reviewed and decided to offer them in their 1994 catalog. I was now in business, receiving royalties (a small percentage of total sales) on my designs! They supplied the name “Fold N Fly” and I supplied the designs and over the next 15 years, we saw over 250,000 kits sold internationally (that’s a million airplanes total!) Thousands of kits were sold to The Discovery Channel/WINGS as well as tens of thousands sold to Scholastic Books distributors. Hundreds of hobby shops, kite stores, US military museums and even FRY’S Electronics carried my Fold N Fly designs. As the years went on, “sales fatigue” and a slowing retail economy took their toll. In 2009, I decided to pursue the Incredible Paper Planes (.com) website on my own and end the long standing marketing relationship with AG Industries, Inc.
About Me:
I’m a US Army veteran (cold war days), milkman, mover and have been a graphic designer for over 15 years. I’ve been married to an incredible lady for 26 years; sometimes to the tune of: “Yes honey, like I said 30 minutes ago, the gradient looks fine on that exhaust nozzle”. My family has been a huge help with all 5 of my children at one time or another, being test pilots or color proofers and my loving wife tolerating dozens of planes all over the house, in her hair, covering sometimes every flat space available in our game room.
